KIEV, October 30 (Itar-Tass) - Ukraine hopes to resolve the issue with the payment for Russian gas in the coming days, the country’s Minister of Energy and the Coal Industry Eduard Stavitsky told reporters on Wednesday. According to him, this matter may be settled “today or tomorrow.”
CEO of Russia’s natural gas monopoly Gazprom Alexei Miller previously said that Kiev had not paid for Russian natural gas imported in August and that the debt amount was about 882 million U.S. dollars. In this regard, the Russian side is considering the introduction of a system of prepayment for gas, as is provided for by the contract.
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov, the country’s government was “controlling” the issue. He acknowledged that there was a problem with the payment, but it was “not critical.” According to Azarov, this matter should be settled between Naftogaz Ukrainy and Gazprom.
