ST. PETERSBURG, October 20 (Itar-Tass) - Eight persons were detained in Russia’s second largest city of St. Petersburg on Sunday as an authorized nationalist action grew into unsanctioned march along the city’s main street, Nevsky Avenue. The nationalists attacked several men of non-Slav nationality.

According to the city police, the nationalist rally in Marsovo Pole Square in the centre of St. Petersburg drew about 150 people. “Eight were detained for violating public order,” a police representative told Itar-Tass. The rally started at 16:00 Moscow time and proceeded calmly. The police did not interfere. The eight persons, who had lit flares, were arrested before the beginning.

At about 16:40, about 50 young men left Marsovo Pole and mover to Nevsky Avenue chanting slogans. On their way, they attacked two men of non-Slav nationality who happened to pass by. Later, this group joint another group of nationalists to gather near Gostinny Dvor. When police arrived at the scene, the crowd broke up.

The police have been unavailable for comment.
