KIEV, October 17 (Itar-Tass) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich said on Thursday that he would support the parliament’s decision under which former Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko would be able to undergo medical treatment abroad.

Yulia Timoshenko is serving her sentence for abuse of power while signing a gas deal with Russia in 2009. “Of course, if the parliament passes that law, I will sign it,” the presidential press service quoted Yanukovich as telling reporters in Donetsk.

Earlier, parliament speaker Vladimir Rybak said the Ukrainian legislation did not envisage the possibility of medical treatment of Ukrainian inmates abroad, including Timoshenko, adding that “much depended on the parliament” in that issue. He appealed to Party of Regions leader Alexander Yefremov and Batkivschina Party leader Arseny Yatsenyuk to prepare the bill.

Kiev expects to sign an association agreement with the EU at the end of November. Reforms in the sphere of democracy, human rights, law, as well as fight against corruption and the settlement of Timoshehko’s case are among the conditions for the signing.
Yanukovich said Ukraine had been working with the EU to find the ways for resolving the problem. “I hope that in the near future we will finalize how this issue can be tackled,” he said.
