HOME| NEWS | 18.10.2013 / Lithuania, Russia to hold gas talks Friday - energy ministry.

VILNIUS, October 17 (Itar-Tass) - The Lithuanian government and Russia's state giant Gazprom have set a date for regular consultations on the terms of Russian natural gas supply to Lithuania. The talks will be held in St. Petersburg on October 18.

“Lithuanian Minister of Energy Jaroslav Neverovič has received an invitation from Aleksander Medvedev, Gazprom's CEO, to discuss Lithuania’s proposals and coordinate positions for taking further steps,” a spokesman for the Lithuanian Energy Ministry said on Thursday.

The consultations are aimed at signing a new gas supply contract. The current contract between Vilnius and Gazprom expires in 2014. The Lithuanian government's goal at the talks with Russia’s Gazprom is to achieve “fair prices” of the gas the company sells to Lithuania.

Lithuania is trying now to ease its complete dependence on Russia and building its own liquefied natural-gas terminal on the Baltic Sea coast, hoping it will thereby gain a firmer foothold at negotiations with Gazprom and eventually get the discount it wants. Lithuania buys Russian gas for 500 dollars per one thousand cubic meters. The price is one of the highest in Europe.
