HELSINKI, October 1 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian ambassador to Finland Alexander Rumyantsev has awarded Russia's state awards to two Finnish citizens, historian Matti Klinger and journalist Arvo Tuominen, who is the author of numerous documentary films about Russia, at a gala ceremony held at the Russian embassy in Helsinki on Tuesday.

The Russian president awarded the Russian state Order of Friendship to two prominent Finnish citizens " for strengthening friendship between Russia and Finland and development of scientific and cultural contacts between the two countries," the Russian ambassador quoted President Putin as saying.

Accepting the high awards handed over to the Finnish laureates by the Russian ambassador, Klinger and Tuominen said it was a great honor to receive the high awards from Russia. The Finnish historian said he has always been a big friend of Russia and as a historian always emphasized the importance of learning Russian history as important for the comprehension of the history of Finland, "which should be looked upon from the point of view of Russia as well," Klinge told the ceremony.

Arvo Tuominen declared he would release a new documentary film in December about soccer player Pyotr Sokolov who until 1917 had played for the Russian soccer team but after the 1917 revolution in Russia worked for British-Finnish intelligence service. At approximately the same time the Finnish journalist will release a new book intended for Russians in Finland, which is kind of a guide book, guiding visitors to places of interest in Finland.

It was announced on Monday that the Russian Order of Friendship will also be awarded to Professor of Russian Studies at Helsinki University Timo Vihavainen, who is the 24th laureate in succession entitled to the prestigious Russian award.
